The Right Reverend John Benedict, CGS, Bishop Ordinary of the Missionary Diocese of the Philippines

The ACC in the Philippines reports that The Right Reverend Bishop John Benedict, CGS, Bishop Ordinary of the Missionary Diocese of the Philippines, died of a heart attack today (December 8th, 2018).

Bishop John Benedict was consecrated in the US on October 20th, 2016 to serve in the Philippines, and moved there shortly thereafter.  He was an ardent evangelist, and with the assistance of his enthusiastic clergy and laity, was in the process of transforming the Missionary Diocese.

Archbishop Haverland writes, "I am deeply saddened by the very unexpected death of Bishop John Benedict.  Bishop John Benedict was doing splendid work as our first bishop in the Philippines, where he served his diocese with, I believe, great self-sacrifice and joy.  We should all pray for a diocese bereft unexpectedly of its father."

No arrangements have been made, but diocesan officials have indicated that their plan is to bring the bishop back St. Isidore's Cathedral for a funeral and wake.
